This day is marked annually with events held around the world by poverty groups, and was started to give a voice to those marginalized by poverty. 2009 marks the 22nd anniversary of the day which originated in France with a commemorative stone carving dedicated to those who live in extreme poverty. Poverty is a global issue - with an estimated 1.1 million children living in poverty in Canada.
