Details:
On June 25th and 26th, members of the York Region Amateur Radio Club will set up temporary emergency radio stations in an outdoor field in Stouffville. They will be demonstrating and competing in a North-America-wide practice of amateur radio emergency response capabilities called Field Day, the largest on-air event in the amateur radio world.
Amateur radio operators train and prepare to provide emergency backup support to York Region emergency providers (police, fire, emergency management). They can create and operate reliable emergency communications systems on very short notice, which has proven invaluable in emergency situations in Canada and the U.S. when other communications systems have failed. The York Region Field Day event proves these abilities in a vigorous contest with other amateur radio clubs.
Members of the Canadian Forces Reserve 700 Communication Squadron will be operating a station on site. Representatives from York Region police, fire, Emergency Medical Services and other agencies have been invited to visit.
The event is also an opportunity for the general public to see amateur radio in action. Visitors are encouraged, and welcome to watch and even operate radio stations to communicate with other stations across North America. York Region’s Field Day will be set up on property at Al’s Tack Shop, 4812 Vandorf Sideroad (between McCowan and Hwy 48) in Stouffville. Visitors are welcome from 3pm to 8pm Saturday June 25th, and 10am to 2pm Sunday June 26th. There is no charge, and refreshments are available.
