‘Oranges and Sunshine’ centres on the extraordinary true story of a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered one of the most shocking social scandals of the last century – the secret mass deportation of children, some as young as four, from Britain to Australia where many were subjected to hard labour and sexual abuse in children’s homes.
Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson) single handedly reunited thousands of families and brought this unbelievable miscarriage of justice to light which finally ended in a formal apology from the British and Australian Prime Ministers to the thousands of victims in the last two years. Hers is an incredible tale of fortitude and selflessness but sadly this film doesn’t do any justice to it.
All films are shown at the Cineplex Odeon Aurora Cinemas, 15460 Bayview Avenue. Each screening is introduced with a greeting and door prizes at 6:45 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. start of the film. The doors are open at 6:00 p.m.
