A portrait of Brit girlhood that’s a million miles from the rosier, cosier likes of An Education, Fish Tank moves with an invigorating sense of velocity and ferocity. It’s no wonder that the camera sometimes seems to struggle to keep up with Mia (Katie Jarvis), a hot-tempered 15-year-old who’s eager to break out of the confines of her council-estate existence.
Given her restlessness, it’s also no surprise that dancing is the teen’s only true release. In the opening solo showcase that sets the tone for this striking second feature by British director Andrea Arnold, Mia busts out moves learned from Ashanti videos and YouTube clips of dance crews. Wearing the tracksuit uniform that marks her as a “hoodie” in the eyes of her social betters, she tries to master the body language of someone older and bolder than this vulnerable girl really is.
